Every morning, Emily and her six-year-old daughter Lily walked through the busy train station on their way to school. Hundreds of people hurried past without noticing the elderly homeless man sitting quietly on a bench.
Lily stopped.
“Mom… he looks so sad.”
Before Emily could answer, the little girl walked over and handed the man her lunch.
“Please take it. I don’t want you to be hungry.”
The old man’s eyes filled with tears.
“Thank you, sweetheart. You’ve given me more kindness than I’ve seen in years.”
Emily stepped closer to apologize, but the moment she saw his face, she froze.
Her purse slipped from her hand.
“Dad…?”
The old man slowly looked up.
“Emily… is that really you?”
Years earlier, a painful family conflict had separated them. She searched for him for a long time before eventually believing he was gone forever.
With trembling hands, the old man reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Emily as a little girl sitting on his shoulders at a county fair.
“I carried this with me every single day,” he whispered.
Emily wrapped her arms around him, unable to stop crying.
Lily looked from one to the other, finally understanding.
The stranger she had wanted to help wasn’t a stranger at all.
He was the grandfather she had never known.
