The elegant outdoor reception was crowded when Claire noticed a little boy making his way between the guests.
He stopped directly in front of her and opened his hand.
“Is this yours?”
An old silver locket rested in his palm.
Claire’s expression changed instantly.
She opened it and found a faded photograph inside—a picture of herself nearly twenty years earlier.
“Where did you get this?”
The boy lowered his eyes.
“It’s the only thing I have left from the day I was abandoned.”
Claire stared at him.
“Who gave it to you?”
“My mom. Before she left, she told me that if I ever found the woman in this picture, I should give it to her.”
Claire crouched beside him.
“What else did she tell you?”
The boy hesitated before answering.
“She said the woman in the picture was my real mother.”
Claire could barely breathe.
Years earlier, after a painful family crisis, she had been told that the baby she had given birth to hadn’t survived. She had carried that grief ever since.
Then she noticed something on the back of the locket.
Two tiny initials.
Claire recognized them immediately.
She had chosen those initials herself before her child was born.
“How old are you?” she whispered.
The boy answered.
The date matched.
Claire covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.
She gently took his hand.
“I don’t know exactly what happened yet,” she said. “But we’re going to find out.”
The boy looked at her uncertainly.
Claire closed the locket around the old photograph.
For years, she had believed her child was gone.
Now a little boy was standing in front of her carrying the one object that suggested someone had lied to her all along.
