The executive hallway was nearly empty when Claire noticed a woman in a cleaning apron mopping the polished floor.
“Move aside. I need to get through.”
The woman quietly stepped away.
Claire walked past without another glance.
Seconds later, the conference-room door opened.
A senior executive appeared.
“Ms. Parker, everyone is waiting for you. We can begin.”
Claire stopped.
To her disbelief, he was speaking to the woman holding the mop.
She calmly removed her gloves and walked toward the meeting room.
Claire hurried after her.
“Wait… who are you?”
The woman turned.
“My name is Evelyn Parker. I own the investment group reviewing your company’s contract.”
Claire’s face changed instantly.
She began apologizing, explaining that she’d been stressed before the meeting.
Evelyn listened calmly.
Then she revealed why she’d been wearing the apron.
That morning, a cleaner had become ill, and Evelyn had helped finish a small task before the office opened.
“I don’t judge people for making mistakes,” Evelyn said. “But I do pay attention to how they treat someone they believe has less power than they do.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
The meeting still happened.
But before discussing numbers, Evelyn asked one question:
“If this is how you treat someone in the hallway, how will you treat the people working under you?”
For the first time that morning, Claire had no answer.
