A homeless man found a strange box in the river and thought it was trash — but when he opened it, he almost dropped it out of surprise 😱😱
The homeless man, who looked to be about sixty, carefully packed his fishing gear into a worn but sturdy backpack. This backpack had seen a lot — rain, snow, heat. Inside were jars of bait, hooks, floats, and some bloodworms in an old matchbox. Fishing wasn’t a hobby for him; it was a way to survive.
He wore an old, threadbare coat, and on his feet were rubber boots he had found a couple of years ago at a dump — one boot was a little smaller than the other, but he had gotten used to it. His back was bent under the weight of the backpack, but he straightened up and headed toward the river, as he did every day. He had no home, no family, no job. Sometimes someone would leave him a hot tea or a piece of bread, but mostly he relied on the river.

After an hour of fishing, when he pulled his line, instead of a fish on the hook, he caught… a cardboard box.
“Trash again,” he grumbled under his breath.
The box was heavy. Something was definitely inside, and the old man was about to throw it back when a strange sound came from the box.

He tensed up. Carefully tearing the soggy cardboard, his heart stopped for a moment. Inside was…

Inside, trembling and pressing her ears back, sat a tiny ginger cat. Thin, wet, with eyes full of fear. She looked at him frightened and meowed.

The old man didn’t say a word. He took off his jacket, wrapped the trembling cat in it, and sat down right by the water. He wasn’t sentimental, but something about this tiny life unlocked an old rusty door in his soul.
He named her Spark.
Since then, everything changed. He started sharing his fish with her and sheltered her in his jacket at night. Despite street life, the cat quickly got better and always followed him — trailing like a little shadow. And one day, she literally saved him.
That winter, when it got especially cold, the old man lost consciousness right on a park bench. He was weak, cold, and hungry. Spark didn’t leave him. She jumped onto his chest, rubbed against him, meowed, and stayed close.

A passerby noticed the strange scene and approached. She called an ambulance. The old man was revived. Then he went to a shelter, where he got hot food and a clean bed. They allowed him to keep the cat.
A couple of weeks later, on a volunteer’s advice, he got a job as a janitor. The salary was small, but it was enough. Spark lived with him in a tiny room at the housing office. He was surprised at how much his life had changed.
He no longer fished. Now he had a job, a roof over his head, and — most importantly — someone to care for.
