Grandfather left me an old, crumbling house in the village, while my sister inherited a two-room apartment in the very center of the city. My husband called me a failure and moved in with my sister. After losing everything, I went to the village. But when I stepped into the house, I was struck with amazement…
The notary’s office was stuffy, filled with the smell of old paper. Anna sat nervously on an uncomfortable chair, palms sweating. Beside her, Elena, her older sister, looked as if she had come not for the reading of a will, but for a business meeting — expensive suit, flawless manicure, phone in hand.
Anna felt small and timid next to Elena, who was confident, successful, always first. When the notary read out that Elena would inherit the apartment, Anna wasn’t surprised. She was used to being second best. But when he announced that the village house and land would go to her, she froze. The dilapidated old house? The one that looked ready to collapse?
Elena smirked:
— At least you got something. Though I can’t imagine what you’ll do with that junk.
Anna held back tears. Why had her grandfather done this? Did he think she didn’t deserve anything better?
Her husband, Mikhail, was furious when he heard the news.
— Your sister gets millions, and you bring me a wreck? You’ve ruined everything again!
That night, he told her he wanted a divorce. Worse, he admitted he was already seeing Elena. Anna’s world collapsed. With nowhere else to go, she packed her things and left for the village.
The house surprised her. Though old, it was clean and prepared for her arrival. And then, among the furniture, Anna discovered a sealed envelope addressed to her in her grandfather’s handwriting.
Inside was a letter.
“Dear Anechka,” it read. “I left you the house for a reason. Elena wouldn’t understand, but you will. Your real inheritance is buried under the old apple tree. A treasure I’ve been collecting all my life. Gold, coins, jewelry. It’s all yours. Use it wisely, to make life better, not worse.”
With trembling hands, Anna went outside and dug under the apple tree. After hours of work, her shovel struck metal. A heavy box surfaced from the earth. Inside, gold gleamed in the sunlight — necklaces, rings, coins, gemstones. A real treasure, more than she had ever dreamed.
She was no longer the poor librarian her husband mocked. She was free.
When Mikhail and Elena tried to return, both pretending to care, Anna saw through them. They wanted the treasure. But she turned them away. Court battles followed, but the will was valid, and the treasure was legally hers.
With the wealth, Anna restored the house and garden, turning it into a beautiful home. She opened a small library, helped the villagers, and finally began living the life she had always wanted.
Her grandfather had been right. She was special. The treasure he left her was not just gold — it was a chance to begin again.
