Three weeks ago, in a Houston courthouse, my ex-husband, Vincent, signed our divorce agreement with a triumphant smile. Obsessed with the desire to keep everything—the luxurious house, the real estate business, and the cars—he demanded all the assets in front of his mother and his new partner.
I accepted without hesitation. Confident as ever, Vincent signed the documents without even reading them over.
What he didn’t know was that his so-called “empire” was nothing but an illusion crumbling under debt. By claiming all the property, the agreement stipulated that he also legally inherited all the financial obligations. When the judge validated the document, Vincent’s lawyer turned pale.
