I was climbing the ladder to cut the tree branches when my dog grabbed the hem of my pants with his teeth and pulled me down: and suddenly I understood the reason for this strange behavior 😨😨
I remember that day well. The morning was gray: the sky covered with clouds, the air still and stifling. It looked like it was going to rain any moment. But I decided not to put it off—the dry branches of the old apple tree near the house had to be cut. The ladder had been ready for a long time, and despite the gloomy sky, I told myself: today, I’ll do it.
I leaned the ladder against the trunk and started to climb. But barely had I taken a few steps when I felt a knock behind me. I turned around and couldn’t believe my eyes.
My dog was trying to climb the ladder behind me. His paws slid, his claws clicked on the metal, and his eyes were fixed on me.
“What are you doing?” I said, smiling nervously. “Stay down.”
I tried to push him away by waving my hand, but he got back on his hind legs, grabbing the rungs with his front paws. Then he actually grabbed the edge of my pants with his teeth and yanked me down so abruptly that I almost lost my balance.
“Ouch! Are you crazy or what?” I hissed. “Let go of me!
”
But he wouldn’t let go. He braced himself on the ladder with his paws and pulled me down, as if doing it on purpose.
Inside me, irritation mingled with a strange feeling of worry. “Why is he doing this?” I thought. —Is he playing? No, there was something more in his gaze. An insistent warning. As if he wanted to say, “Don’t go up there.”
I chased him away again, threatening him sternly:
“Are you leaving now or not? Let me cut these branches in peace!”
But I had barely climbed a little higher when he grabbed my pants again and pulled me down. I barely held on, my heart pounding: one false move and I could have fallen.
I stopped, breathing heavily, and suddenly I understood: we wouldn’t get far like this. If he continued, I would really fall and break everything I could. I had to make a decision.
I climbed down, looked him sternly in the eye, and said:
“Very well. If you’re so smart, you’ll stay attached to the chain.”
He lowered his head, guilty, but I led him to his kennel and tied him up anyway. I thought I could finally continue peacefully. I took the ladder and was about to climb back up when suddenly, something unexpected happened 😢😨 That’s when I understood why the dog had been behaving so strangely. Continued in the first comment 👇👇
The sky was ripped open with a bright, blinding light. The crash followed immediately. Lightning struck the tree, exactly on the trunk where I was about to climb. There was a loud crack, the smell of burnt bark spread, and sparks flew everywhere. I stepped back, covering my face with my hands.
For a moment, I stood frozen, unable to breathe. It was only after a few seconds that I realized: if it weren’t for my stubborn dog, I’d be up there, on that ladder, right at the top. And then…
I looked at him. He was standing by his kennel, chain taut, staring at me with that look that held more understanding than many human words.
“My God…” I whispered, feeling shivers run down my skin. “You saved my life.”
I crouched down beside him, hugged him by the neck, and he gently wagged his tail, as if he knew he’d done the right thing.
That’s when I understood: sometimes our animals see and feel things that we humans don’t.
