A Nightmare Return Home: My Story with Newborn Twins and a Betraying Mother-in-Law

Many imagine coming home with newborn twins as one of the happiest and most magical moments of life. For me, however, that initial dream quickly turned into a real and painful nightmare.

After spending three days in the hospital recovering from a difficult delivery, I was finally ready to go home with my two wonderful daughters, Ella and Sonja. I had dreamed of that moment for months: imagining Daniil greeting us with flowers, tears in his eyes as he held one of the babies in his arms.

Homecoming with Twins

However, that plan was suddenly shattered by an unexpected phone call that completely upended all my expectations.

“Hi, honey,” my husband started, his voice rushed. “Sorry, but I can’t come pick you up as we planned.”

“What?” I asked, adjusting Sonja’s diaper. “Daniil, I just gave birth to twins. What could be more important?”

“It’s my mother,” he replied sharply. “She’s having severe chest pains. I have to take her urgently to a hospital closer to her.”

Those words hit me like a bucket of cold water.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Daniil, I need you now.”

“I know,” he sighed. “It all happened so fast. I’ll come back as soon as I can.”

With eyes full of pain, I swallowed a scream of disappointment and only replied, “Okay. I’ll take a taxi.”

“Thanks,” he murmured before hanging up.

Taxi Departure

Daniil’s mother lived in another city, so the chances of him coming that day were practically none. His deep attachment to his mother was well known, and I had no hope of him being at home. I tried to convince myself it wasn’t cruelty but the usual priority given to one’s maternal family. Still, inside, the pain was sharp.

That same mother-in-law, Larisa, was the one who insisted on having her own key to the house, claiming it was to help with the babies. And now suddenly she was “sick.”

I pushed those thoughts away, put the babies in the car seats Daniil had left, and took a taxi home.

However, as soon as I arrived, my heart froze in shock: suitcases, diaper bags, and even the mattress for the crib were scattered around the porch and lawn. A feeling of oppression engulfed me. I paid the driver, took the babies, and approached the door.

Changed Locks

Driven by instinct, I called Daniil even though I knew he wouldn’t answer. I tried the key in the lock—but it didn’t work. I tried again, without success: all the locks had been changed. Then I noticed a note attached to a suitcase:

“Get lost with your little parasites! I know everything. Daniil.”

My breath caught. My hands trembled. Re-reading the message, I hoped it was a cruel joke, but it was real.

I called immediately, but it went to voicemail. I tried again with no result. My anxiety grew along with the babies’ crying. I rocked them in my arms, trying to find calm.

Call to My Mother

“Mom…” I whispered, dialing my mother’s number.

“Zhenya? What’s wrong? Are the babies okay?”

I explained with difficulty:

“Daniil… he changed the locks, threw out our stuff, and left a terrible note.”

“WHAT?!” her voice grew loud. “Stay there, I’m coming right away.”

The hours seemed endless. When my mother arrived and saw the scene, she immediately understood everything.

“This can’t be… Daniil would never do such a thing. He loves you all.”

“I thought so too… but he’s not answering, and what does ‘I know everything’ mean?” I showed her the note.

“Come with me, we’ll fix this,” she said, hugging me.

Following her advice, we packed up the things in the car and left. That night I didn’t sleep. In the morning, I left the babies with her and went back home to look for answers.

The yard was empty. I knocked on the door with no answer. I circled the building and, peeking through the window, I was shocked.

Larisa, my mother-in-law, sat comfortably at a table sipping tea, completely calm. I knocked hard. She looked up and gave me a scornful smile.

Confrontation with the Mother-in-Law

“What are you doing here?” I hissed.

“Zhenya, didn’t you get the message? You don’t live here anymore.”

“Where is Daniil? Why…”

“He’s in the hospital, in my city. Taking care of the ‘sick mother.’”

I stared at her in disbelief.

“Sick? You’re right here in front of me!”

She laughed with a poisonous smile.

“Maybe I’m feeling better now. Things happen.”

“You arranged this! You faked being sick!”

She shrugged, responding contemptuously:

“So what?”

My fingers clenched into fists.

Rising Anger

“Why did you do this?” I asked, voice breaking.

“I’ve always told Daniil that the family needs a boy. And you? You gave birth to two girls. Useless.”

My throat tightened in a knot of sadness.

“I knew you would ruin his life. That’s why I did what was necessary. I wrote the note in his name, took his phone when he wasn’t looking. I arranged everything to make you leave. Yet you’re still here…”

I couldn’t believe her words: she had deceived her son, lured him to another city, stolen his phone, and forged a message just because we had girls.

“So… you sent us away for that?”

“Of course,” she said coldly. “I even bribed the nurse so he would stay longer in the hospital. And it worked.”

“You’re sick!” I shouted with anger.

“I protect my family. Daniil always listens to me and understands, as always.”

Mother-in-Law’s Declaration

I managed to reach the hospital where I found Daniil nervously pacing.

“Zhenya! Where have you been? I don’t have my phone and didn’t know your number!”

“Your mother took your phone. She faked being sick. She locked me and the babies out.”

He froze.

“What? That can’t be…”

“She arranged everything, including the note. And she’s home drinking tea like a queen.”

“Why?” he muttered.

“Because we have girls,” I said bitterly.

His expression first turned pale, then filled with rage. Without a word, he headed home, and I followed immediately.

At our return, Larisa greeted us with the same smile. However, seeing her son’s furious face, that expression vanished instantly.

Final Confrontation

“Mom,” he said coldly, “what have you done?”

“I only wanted to…” she began to justify herself.

“Enough! You forced me to leave my wife and our newborn daughters for your lie! You took my phone, forged a message, kicked Zhenya out!”

“I wanted to protect you! I didn’t want this…”

“Protect my family? Do you think my daughters aren’t enough? That’s your problem, not mine. If you want a son, have one yourself!”

I had never seen Daniil so firm, and I could only be proud of him: he was finally on my side.

“Pack your things and leave,” he said firmly.

Mother-in-Law’s Departure

“I’m your mother!” she protested.

“And Zhenya is my wife. Ella and Sonja are my daughters. If you don’t respect them, you have no place in our lives.”

This time Larisa was speechless and left that same evening.

Daniil apologized to me repeatedly, changed the locks, blocked his mother’s number, and even reported the nurse. It wasn’t an easy road, but we got through it.

One evening, as I was putting my babies to bed, I realized something important: Larisa tried to destroy our family, but paradoxically, she only made it stronger and more united.
