Tonia felt unhappy with herself as she approached forty, even though others said she looked great. Her husband Igor had grown cold, stopped giving compliments, and showed little interest in family life. When Tonia suggested spending New Year’s together in the mountains, Igor calmly admitted that he would celebrate with his mistress and said he was ashamed to show his wife to his friends.
Shocked and hurt, Tonia decided not to beg or argue. She booked a trip to the mountains for herself and left before the holidays. There, she rediscovered joy in simple things — fresh air, skiing, laughter — and met Mikhail, a kind man who had also survived loss and betrayal. Their warm, easy communication helped Tonia feel alive again.
After returning home, Tonia told Igor she wanted a divorce. He reacted with anger and threats, but she stood firm. She moved out, told her son the truth, and went through a difficult divorce and property division.
Over time, Tonia focused on herself, her health, and her happiness. She felt younger, freer, and hopeful. She knew that life did not end at forty — it was only beginning. Igor, meanwhile, lost his family and friendships and realized his mistake too late.
