To the wealthy matriarch, Elena was just a “seasonal mistake” her late son had made—a poor girl with no pedigree and, presumably, no future in the Vanderbilt empire.
“Don’t come back begging!” Mrs. Vanderbilt sneered, adjusting her diamond necklace. “The will is clear. Everything belongs to family. And you, my dear, are not family.”
Elena stopped. The fear vanished from her eyes, replaced by a mother’s fierce resolve. She turned back, ignoring the rain soaking her hair, and held up the crumpled paper she had been hiding. It wasn’t just a letter; it was a sonogram attached to a DNA test result, stamped just yesterday.
“You’re right, Beatrice. The will leaves everything to the heir,” Elena said, her voice cutting through the storm. She walked up the steps and slapped the paper into the older woman’s hand. “Meet your grandson. And according to the clause your son added last month… the legal guardian of the heir controls the estate until he turns twenty-one.”
Mrs. Vanderbilt’s face went pale as she read the document. Her knees buckled. She wasn’t the lady of the house anymore; she was a guest in her grandson’s home.
