Svetlana comes home to find her husband Dmitry and his mother already deciding how to spend her money. Without asking, Dmitry gives Svetlana’s savings to his mother to buy an expensive stove, dismissing his wife’s objections as “selfish.” Soon after, his mother returns, pushing them to buy a refrigerator as well—again expecting Svetlana to pay.

She leaves Dmitry a note, her keys, and ends the marriage without arguments or drama. Later she learns that the costly stove and refrigerator were never even connected—money wasted, promises empty.
The story ends with Svetlana free and relieved, understanding that peace, autonomy, and self-respect are worth far more than any expensive household appliance.
