She Was About to Say “Yes” When Her Father Stepped In: “You Need to Know Who You’re Marrying”

The square was packed when Daniel dropped to one knee in front of Emily.

He opened the small ring box.

“Will you marry me?”

Emily covered her mouth, overwhelmed. People nearby stopped to watch, waiting for her answer.

Then she saw her father pushing through the crowd.

“Please… don’t say yes.”

Daniel immediately stood.

“What’s going on?”

Her father, Robert, looked directly at Emily.

“There’s something about his past you need to know.”

Emily turned toward Daniel. His expression had already changed.

Robert continued.

“Years ago, he was involved with your sister, Lauren. Then one day, he disappeared.”

Emily stared at Daniel.

She knew Lauren had gone through a painful period years earlier, but her family had always avoided discussing exactly what happened.

“Is that true?”

Daniel looked down.

“It’s complicated.”

Robert reached into his jacket and pulled out an old photograph.

Daniel and Lauren were standing together outside a small house.

Emily turned the photograph over and saw the date.

It had been taken just days before Lauren suddenly left town.

“You told me you’d never met her.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But you didn’t.”

Robert pointed to someone partially visible at the edge of the photograph.

A young boy.

Emily looked closer.

“Who is that?”

Daniel said nothing.

Robert answered.

“He’s the reason your sister disappeared.”

The ring box slipped from Daniel’s hand and landed on the pavement.

Emily’s voice trembled.

“What happened?”

Daniel finally spoke.

“I didn’t hurt Lauren. But I made her a promise, and when everything became difficult, I walked away.”

Robert pulled out his phone.

“There’s one more thing. Lauren knows about today.”

Daniel suddenly looked terrified.

“What do you mean?”

“She came back.”

Robert looked past him.

Emily slowly turned around.

A woman was making her way through the crowd.

Emily recognized her immediately.

Lauren.

Daniel stood motionless as she approached.

Only moments earlier, Emily had been deciding whether to marry him.

Now she was waiting to hear why the man she loved had hidden an entire chapter of her own family’s past.
